Braces after 30: how it differs from treating teenagers, and where the time goes

Why "too late" is a myth

A tooth is not fixed in bone permanently: it is held by a ligament and moves if gentle pressure is applied for long enough. That ability does not disappear — orthodontists treat patients successfully even at 60. The clinic's cases include adult patients whose arches were widened, whose canines were brought into line, and for whom space was cleared for an implant.

What genuinely differs for adults:

The bone is denser — teeth move more slowly, so treatment takes longer.

Growth has finished — the jaw itself cannot be 'corrected,' only the teeth can be repositioned. If the problem lies in the jaw itself (strongly protruding or underdeveloped), braces solve it only partially, and the orthodontist will say so upfront.

There is a history — fillings, crowns, missing teeth, a receded gum line. All of this is factored into the plan: a crown cannot be moved the way a natural tooth can, and neighbours of a missing tooth have often already tilted into the gap.

Gums are more vulnerable — hygiene is harder with braces, and if the gums are already inflamed, everything gets worse.

What needs to happen before braces

For an adult this is mandatory, not an upsell:

Professional cleaning (25,000 ₸) — braces are not fitted over plaque.

Treating decay and replacing old fillings — decay under a bracket cannot be treated, and taking the system off for a filling means losing months.

Braces or aligners

Neither cares how old you are. The difference is in the task:

How long it takes

After the braces come off (50,000 ₸): a retainer — a fixed wire on the inside of the arch (30,000 ₸ per arch) and/or a removable night guard (30,000 ₸). In adults, teeth try harder to shift back, so the retainer is worn for years, and the fixed one is worn almost permanently.

Crowding that made cleaning impossible, along with a shifted midline: both the arch and the symmetry of the smile were corrected.
