Sudden toothache: where to go without an appointment in Astana and what to do before you get there

What to do if a tooth flares up at night or on a day off: how to ease the pain before your visit, what not to do, and when the pain means an emergency. Tursunov Clinic sees adults with acute pain without an appointment. Astana.

Key points

  • A toothache rarely goes away on its own: it either fades for a while or turns into a swelling. Waiting makes it more expensive and more painful.
  • Before your visit: a pain reliever you normally tolerate, a cool rinse, no heat, no poking, and avoid chewing on the sore side.
  • Go to an emergency room instead of a dental clinic if your face is swollen, your temperature is above 38°C, or it hurts to swallow or open your mouth.
  • Tursunov Clinic sees adults with acute pain without an appointment during working hours: Mon–Fri 10:00–20:00, Sat 11:00–18:00. The consultation is free, an X-ray is 11,000 ₸.

Why you cannot just "wait it out"

A toothache is a sign that inflammation has reached the nerve or the bone under the root. It can quieten down for a day or two: the nerve dies, and there is nothing left to hurt. That is not recovery — the infection keeps moving toward the root and into the bone, and a week or two later it comes back as a swollen cheek. By then a simple root canal treatment turns into an extraction, and possibly an incision.

So there is one rule: if the pain is bad enough to keep you from sleeping or eating, see a dentist within the next day.

What to do before your visit

A pain reliever. Whatever you normally take for a headache and tolerate well is fine. Do not exceed the dose on the packaging, and do not put the tablet directly on the tooth — that burns the mucosa, it does not treat anything.

A cool rinse. Room-temperature water with a spoon of salt, gently — not vigorous swishing, which could dislodge a temporary filling if you have one.

No heat. A heating pad, a warm compress, "warming the cheek" is the most common mistake: heat speeds up the inflammation, and you wake up swollen the next morning.

Don't touch it. No poking with a toothpick, no pressing, no trying to squeeze out pus. Avoid chewing on the sore side.

A raised pillow. Pain is worse at night because lying flat sends more blood to the head. Sleeping half-sitting helps.

What does not help and actually hurts: alcohol 'for disinfection,' garlic or fat 'on the tooth,' an antibiotic from the medicine cabinet without a prescription — it blurs the picture without stopping the infection.

When it is no longer a dental matter but an emergency

the swelling spreads to the cheek, eye or neck;

temperature above 38°C;

swallowing hurts or is difficult, or the mouth opens less than two finger-widths;

the pain throbs and keeps building for several hours despite pain relievers.

These are signs of a purulent process that has spread beyond the tooth. In that case: an emergency room or a maxillofacial department first, then a dentist.

What an acute-pain visit at Tursunov Clinic looks like

Adults with acute pain are seen without an appointment during working hours. Come in, tell the receptionist what hurts, and you will be fitted into the next open slot with the therapist or surgeon.

At the visit:

Examination and an X-ray. A focused CBCT segment (4,500 ₸) or a full scan (11,000 ₸) is usually enough to show whether it is the tooth or the gum, the nerve or the root.

Pain relief at the same visit: opening the tooth and treating the canal, treating deep decay, or extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. Anaesthesia is local.

A temporary filling (5,000 ₸) and a plan for when to come back for definitive treatment.

The cost depends on what is found: cavity treatment — 32,000–43,000 ₸, root canal treatment for periodontitis — from 70,000 ₸, an extraction — 20,000–40,000 ₸. The consultation is free, and the estimate is given before anything starts.

What happens if the tooth cannot be saved

Sometimes the X-ray shows the tooth is broken below the gumline or cracked along the root. Then it is extracted — gently, to preserve the bone for a future implant. There is a separate article on this: "Atraumatic tooth extraction." You do not need to decide about an implant on the day of extraction: first the pain is dealt with, then the options are discussed calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I come without an appointment on a Saturday?

Yes, on Saturdays the clinic is open 11:00–18:00. It is closed on Sundays.

What if the pain starts at night?

Until morning: a pain reliever, a cool rinse, sleeping half-sitting. If swelling or fever appears, call an ambulance — do not wait for morning.

Will you see a child?

No, the clinic treats adults from age 18 only. Take a child to a paediatric dental clinic.

How long is the wait without an appointment?

Until the nearest doctor is free; the receptionist can give you an estimate by phone or WhatsApp — the clinic's contact details are on the site.

Will I get an antibiotic?

Only if the doctor sees a reason for one. An antibiotic on its own does not treat a toothache.
