Teeth whitening in Astana: how it works, who it suits, and why hygiene comes first
How professional teeth whitening at Tursunov Clinic works: preparation, the procedure, sensitivity, what does not whiten, how long the result lasts, and the cost. Doctor: Aziza Zhashibekova, Astana.
Key points
- Whitening changes the shade of your own teeth; fillings, crowns and veneers do not lighten — so the plan comes before the procedure.
- Professional cleaning is mandatory before whitening: plaque and tartar block the gel, and the shade underneath is different.
- Sensitivity in the first 1–2 days is normal; the clinic follows the procedure with a remineralising treatment for the enamel.
- Whitening is not done with untreated decay, inflamed gums, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children — the clinic treats patients from age 18.
- At Tursunov Clinic, professional whitening costs 65,000 ₸ and is performed by restorative therapist Aziza Zhashibekova.
What tooth whitening actually does
A tooth's shade comes from the colour of the dentin (which is yellowish) and how translucent the enamel is. Over the years enamel thins, dentin darkens, and staining from tea, coffee, wine and tobacco settles into the enamel's micropores. A peroxide-based whitening gel penetrates the enamel and dentin and breaks down the stained compounds. The tooth is not 'painted' — its own tissue becomes lighter.
Three consequences follow, worth understanding before you book:
Only living tooth tissue whitens. Fillings, restorations, crowns and veneers stay the same colour. If there are fillings on the front teeth, they can become more noticeable after whitening and may need remaking to match the new shade — this is discussed in advance.
The result is individual. Yellowish teeth whiten better than greyish ones; a shade caused by tetracycline or fluorosis changes less. At the exam the doctor tells you what to realistically expect rather than promising "ten shades."
The effect is not permanent. Teeth pick up staining again. How long the result lasts depends on habits; cleaning every six months helps maintain it.
Why hygiene comes first
Aziza Zhashibekova performs both professional cleaning and whitening, and that is not a coincidence: one does not work without the other. Plaque and tartar block the gel from reaching the enamel, and the tooth underneath stays the same. On top of that, teeth are already half a shade to a shade lighter right after cleaning — simply because the stained plaque has been removed — and some patients stop there.
So the order at the clinic is: exam → professional cleaning (ultrasound, Air Flow, polishing — 25,000 ₸) → treating decay and gums if needed → whitening.
How the procedure goes
[General description of in-office whitening; the specific system and duration will be filled in by Aziza — items 1, 3.]
Exam and recording the starting shade. The doctor checks for decay, enamel cracks, exposed root necks and gum inflammation — any of these mean whitening is postponed. The shade is recorded on a scale and photographed.
Protection. The lips, cheeks and gums are isolated; a protective barrier is applied to the gum so the gel does not reach the mucosa.
Applying the gel. The gel stays on the teeth for several 10–20-minute cycles; between cycles it is removed and reapplied. If the system uses light activation, the lamp runs during the cycle.
Restoring the enamel. After whitening, enamel is temporarily dehydrated and more permeable, so a remineralising product is applied right away — this step is included in the price of professional whitening. It reduces sensitivity and returns minerals to the enamel.
Recommendations. The first 48 hours call for a "white diet": no coffee, tea, wine, berries, sauces or tobacco. Enamel absorbs staining more readily than usual during this time.
The visit takes about ninety minutes [to confirm]. The number of sessions — one or two — depends on the starting shade and sensitivity.
Sensitivity: what is normal
Tingling or brief "zings" in the teeth over the first day or two are a normal reaction to the peroxide and pass on their own. Remineralising therapy, a sensitive-teeth toothpaste, and avoiding very cold or hot food and drink for two days all help. If sensitivity is severe or lasts more than three days, contact the clinic.
To lower the risk, the doctor assesses the state of the enamel beforehand and, if needed, prescribes a course of remineralising therapy before whitening as well as after, not only after.
Who whitening is not suitable for
Patients with untreated decay, enamel cracks or exposed tooth necks — treatment comes first.
With inflamed gums — gum treatment comes first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
Patients under 18 — the clinic treats adults only.
Those whose front teeth are mostly covered by crowns or veneers — there is nothing there to whiten; replacing the restorations is discussed instead.
With an allergy to the gel's components.
Whitening or veneers
A common question, and the answer depends on the goal. If the teeth are straight and intact and only the colour is a concern, whitening is the answer: a reversible procedure with no preparation of the tooth. If there are chips, unevenness, old fillings or gaps, veneers are the answer, and in that case the patient's own teeth are whitened before the ceramic shade is chosen, so the veneers match the neighbouring teeth. The clinic follows this sequence; the guide to choosing veneer shade describes it in more detail.
How long the result lasts and how to maintain it
From a year to several years, depending on coffee, tea, smoking and hygiene. To maintain it: professional cleaning every six months, a moderately abrasive toothpaste, and a straw for staining drinks. Repeat whitening is possible, but no more often than the doctor advises — the enamel needs to be protected.

Frequently asked questions
Does teeth whitening hurt?
The procedure itself is painless; some sensitivity is possible in the first 1–2 days, which remineralising therapy relieves.
Does whitening damage the enamel?
Not with a professional protocol that includes enamel restoration. Home abrasives and baking soda are what damage enamel.
How many shades lighter will my teeth get?
It is individual; at the exam the doctor shows a realistic range on the shade scale — a specific number of shades cannot be promised in advance.
Can a single dark tooth be whitened?
A tooth darkens from the inside after root canal treatment; there is a separate method for that — internal whitening. It is discussed at the consultation.
Will a whitening toothpaste give the same result?
No. A toothpaste removes surface plaque with an abrasive and restores the natural shade; it cannot lighten the tooth's own tissue, and daily use of abrasive pastes wears down enamel. Low-abrasion toothpastes suit home maintenance after in-office whitening — the doctor can suggest which.
Is Air Flow the same as whitening?
No. Air Flow removes surface plaque and staining, restoring the natural colour; no chemical lightening of the tissue takes place.
