Bonding day
Bonding takes 1–1.5 hours and needs no anaesthesia: the brackets are fixed to the teeth, then the wire is threaded through. It should not hurt; it is uncomfortable, though: the lining of the cheeks and lips takes a few days to get used to the brackets. Orthodontic wax, which the clinic gives you, helps.
The first week: what is normal
An ache when biting for 3–7 days — the wire has started moving the teeth; ordinary painkillers relieve it. A feeling that the teeth are "loose" — they are supposed to move a little. Sore spots on the lining — wax on the bracket, rinsing, and it heals in a few days.
Food is soft for the first days: porridge, soups, purées; hard, chewy and staining foods are off the menu for the whole course. Call the doctor if a bracket comes off or the wire sticks out and scratches: it is fixed in 10 minutes, and without the fix the tooth stops moving.
When you see results
The first shifts of the front teeth are noticeable after 4–8 weeks — usually the teeth that stick out most straighten first. The arch widens more slowly, and canines outside the arch take months to move into place.
